Our first Dandie was bought from Mr. Brian Peel-Yates, in 1962, a D.D.T.C. Committee member at that time. In the 1970's we began showing then breeding Dandies using the kennel name Renald. My husband and I have served on the D.D.T.C. Committee for many years. John served over 30years,25 of them as Sec. & Treasurer. I have been on the Committee since the early 80's and am the present Chairman. We bred 16 Champions over the years but have not shown regulaly since 1994. My favourite passtime is collecting Dandie items or reading books or any documents with Dandie contents. I am the Club's historian, a task I realy enjoy. Since our breed was known in the 1700's, there is a wealth of knowledge to be found about this wonderful terrier breed, and many hours of enjoyment to be had when owning one

Ei By Gum Janet and welcome!
Pleased to have you on board. You will appreciate that this is a site for ALL British and Irish Heritage Dog Breeds and we look forward to you contributing towards any discussions.
For example, could we have your views as to why so many excellent British and Irish breeds seem to have become "forgotten" and what can be done to ensure their long term future.

I think that quite often breeds are "geographical", owners walk their dogs which become known locally. Quite often this visual image remains and could, hopefully, influence when that person decides to buy a puppy. "Discover Dogs" is a "God Send" to our vulnerable breeds. Publicity is essential and it does work, but may take time If anyone out there remembers World War 11, they may also remember Dr. Joseph Goebbels who was Hitler's Chief of Propaganda. His task was to send out reports of German victories, not always true. His philosophy was "that if the same message was sent long enough, it would be believed" The same philosophy is used today by companies who advertise their products on T.V.. They would not spend such large amounts of money if the return was not even greater. So keep these breeds noticed whenever possible, publicize in whichever media is available to help these breeds to survive.

Hi Janet,
Excellent points raised,it's good to see one of our "senior" breeders thinking so progressively!
Perhaps a series of Heritage Dog Breed walks up and down the country, ending at a dog friendly country pub where we could all enjoy an alfresco lunch?
Agreed Discover Dogs is a vital tool for us, but do we make the most of it I wonder, do our breeds "stick out" enough when we are just all lumped together?
Publicity and media coverage as you say are vital, but they have a drip drip drip effect, we have to keep on with it, but not all breeds or all breeders welcome it. And are we generating a demand which we are unable to fill? Does this force up the price of our puppies?
Fascinating topics - welcome aboard Janet!

Hello - another Dandie owner here. My beautiful, naughty, affectionate, intelligent and greedy boy is well known to Paul - he's a "Yazga" puppy! He is my avatar image - gorgeous, eh? We had a pepper girl ("Sandyclose") for 14 years, and life was so quiet without a Dandie.

I have a LiveJournal page

dandie-dinmont.livejournal.com/

where I ramble about all sorts of things, including Dandies, and I have posted about this BHDB site to try to raise a little more awareness.

Beverley.
