Hello?
|
|
|
Seems a bit quiet around here!
Well i'm Rhiannon and I stumbled across this site quite by accident after looking for information on some native sheep breeds! Promoting rare and vulnerable breeds is something I was quite passionate about during college, often tailoring my assignments towards the advantages of using some of our sadly declining native breeds. I never believed Cardigan Corgis would be considered vulnerable, they always seem so popular! And I must admit when I found out that Glens had the fewest registrations I was in a little bit of shock, i'd fallen head over heels with a Glen we had in my old work placement for grooming, and i'm now kicking myself for not finding out more than the fact she was owned by a headmistress and routinely taken to school to lounge in the office! My mother was rather shocked when she realised her favourite breed was also considered vulnerable, the Otterhound!
Obviously i'm not able to do anything other than promote native breeds and sing their virtues whilst showing their vices, I would not dare get myself into a position where a landlord could turn around and tell me I can either live on the street or get rid of my dogs, but hopefully i'll be able to generate a little bit of interest in these native breeds and help in whatever practical way I can until such I time I can actively commit to maintaining a breed for the future. It would be a shame if some of the breeds mentioned were no longer able to be brought back in 10 years time as they really do offer so much :(
Oh my, i've rambled just a little bit! I wish you all the best success at promoting your breeds at events to come!

Hello and Welcome Rhiannon!
We're busy at weekends :) There are two displays of British Heritage Dog Breeds this weekend - the Midland Game Fair and Darlington Dog Show.
But you are very welcome. It isn't a requirements to own a breed to care about their future. We are all just gathering on this website at the moment - we only opened at the end of July. Great that you are available for promotion work - what part of the world do you live in?

Heh, I realised that almost as soon as I hit submit, my body clock hasn't quite adjusted to the fact it's already the weekend i'm afraid!
Whilst not a requirement to own them it is handy to have a few friendly faces at hand to show themselves off, it's one thing to enthuse about the qualities of an Otterhound, but quite another when you're enthusing and have a few fine examples close at hand so people can see "the real deal". It's like doing my 'pet' talks without having the pets with me, people soon get bored of being told how wonderful something is if there's nothing tangible they can touch, but introduce the animal and they'll even read the leaflets whilst they get to know the beasties.
I live in the North West, Cumbria to be exact. Of course, anything I can get to i'll be more than happy to help set up info booths/attempt to find suitable places for heritage breed meet and greets or whatever :) I know a few of the breeds on the list a lot of younger people have shockingly never heard of, my friends included, so the more promotional work and publications the better :)

Excellent Rhiannon! You are on the volunteer list - I have your email.
Actually you are from my neck of the woods, although I live near the coast of Norfolk just now, I still have roots in Appleby.
