I realise that the aims of this site are to be a discussion forum and information exchange. It is not a club, society or pressure group. Even so I feel we cannot ignore the elephant in the living room- ie the fact that there are different views of the future of heritage breeds and different approaches to securing their future.

On one hand we have those of us who see our heritage breeds in a battle for market share with other breeds and crosses. We seek to widen the ownership of these breeds and encourage owners to think of having at least one litter with their dogs. Our view is that numbers are important and not just to maintain a viable breeding population. We think that no breed can or should be preserved purely as a show dog and needs owners and breeders of all types.

In the other camp are those who focus on the quality of the breeds as expressed by results in the showring. They worry about widening ownership too far and put emphasis on getting the right owners for these breeds. They are very concerned about inexperienced people becoming breeders and believe the breeds are safe in experienced hands. They see limits to how far these breeds can or should be popularised.

We need to at least recognise that these views exist and are not easily brought together. I put myself firmly in the first camp but respect the sincere views held by people on both sides. Heritage breeds would be in a better position if all of us were singing from the same hymn sheet.

There always has been conflict between groups of both camps for a variety of reasons so I don't think that will ever change to be honest.
My personal view is that all dogs should be pets first and foremost and whatever 'job' they do second to that and that all breeders should consider health and temperament and conformation when breeding regardless as to what 'purpose' the puppies are intended for.
