"Politics in general excites a tiny few, interests a minority but bores and bemuses most of us. The same is true of doggie politics. Very few of pet owners or even serious breeders and show exhibitors take much of an interest. We tend to have better things to do with our lives, like enjoying time with our dogs!

Sadly, we can’t get away from politics in the dog world any more than we can in other aspects of our lives. Having some understanding of the issues and the arguments is always useful.

There are aspects of life that fascinate and repulse us in equal measure. Look at the television schedules and you’ll see plenty of true crime and cops with cameras. On a more mundane level there are “Life of grime” type shows featuring health inspectors, dustmen and drain cleaners. Even rat catchers have recently had prime time fame.

In the dog world the dirty and unglamorous jobs were the domain of the terrier. Hounds might tackle the same prey but are somehow classed as inherently nobler than the terrier. Perhaps it’s because the ancestors of our hounds and gundogs enjoyed the patronage of the nobility. The terrier was the dog of the poor, paying its way by keeping down the vermin population.

Humour me, I’ll get around to dogs in a minute, just for now try to think of the epitome of a British heritage brand. The single branded product that best sums up the traditional qualities of the inhabitants of the British Isles. I’m willing to bet that some of you thought of Land Rover.

Those who move in higher circles, or possess a vivid imagination, might have said Bentley or Rolls-Royce. The cooks among you might have hit on Coleman’s mustard, Bovril or Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce. The drinkers might have come up with Gordon’s gin, Mackeson, your favourite real ale, or just about any Scotch whisky brand.

Asked the same question I would say Barbour, the waxed jacket people...
